Around the world, women and girls encounter violations of their right to water, food security, and a clean, healthy, and safe environment. Unequal gender-based power relations that exist across the globe are the underlying causes of the violation of these basic rights, often accompanied by multiple intersecting forms of oppression and discrimination. For example, women are disproportionately affected when they are displaced from their lands as a consequence of large-scale infrastructure, mining, or land conversion projects. Moreover, the risk of losing their livelihoods, their homes, and their very lives substantially increases if they are part of indigenous communities and/or any other socially or politically marginalised group.

That being said, women play a vital role in managing natural resources and mobilising efforts to preserve access and use of these resources for themselves, their families, and broader communities. Women are key experts in analysing the contexts and problems they face and in coming up with viable, sustainable and innovative environmentally-just proposals and solutions, yet are often ignored and marginalised in key decision-making processes. Furthermore, many women-led groups, collectives and organizations that support and advocate for women’s rights and environmental justice are being bypassed by the growing funding streams available for work on environmental sustainability, disaster mitigation, and climate change.

The Global Alliance for Green and Gender Action (GAGGA) is a multi-actor network that is active from local to international levels, supporting local movements fighting for women’s rights and environmental justice and further amplifying local women´s struggles and solutions. Since 2016, GAGGA collaborates with and provides funding support to national, regional and global women´s rights and environmental justice funds and organisations in more than 30 countries across Latin America, Africa, Asia and Europe and prioritises financial and capacity strengthening support to local groups, collectives and organizations who are fighting for women´s rights and environmental justice.

GAGGA is a consortium led by the Fondo Centroamericano de Mujeres, based in Nicaragua, in collaboration with Both ENDS and Mama Cash, both based in The Netherlands, and in a strategic partnership with the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs. It also partners with Global Greengrants Fund (GGF) and Prospera – International Network of Women Funds, as strategic allies, to develop and offer insights into the importance of resourcing women’s rights and environmental justice.
