Women detail impact of energy projects in Indonesia

Published on February 2, 2021

Indonesia’s government has pledged to source 23% of its power from renewables by 2025 and 31% by 2050. However, these energy projects often violate the human rights of women, local communities and Indigenous peoples due to lack of consultation, involvement, and prior consent.

GAGGA partner Aksi! compiled testimonies from more than 50 women on how they’ve been negatively impacted by geothermal, hydropower and wind farm projects across Indonesia. Aksi! collected these stories through Feminist Participatory Action Research (FPAR) on a Women and Energy Program that was conducted from February to September 2020.

The women’s stories are intended to show decision-makers at local, national and international levels the need for people-centered solutions and alternatives that are applied democratically and inclusively with the input, consent and control of women and local communities. You can read the stories below.
