Collective momentum for gender-just climate action: From New York Climate Week to COP30

Dear partners, friends, and allies,

As we look back on Climate Week NYC and the UN General Assembly, we extend our heartfelt gratitude
to all who gathered, shared, and contributed to the powerful dialogues in New York.

For GAGGA, this week was a vivid reminder of what collective action can achieve. The energy, ideas,
and commitments shared reaffirmed what we’ve witnessed over nearly a decade: when women, girls,
trans, and intersex people lead climate action on the frontlines, transformation follows.

For those who couldn’t join us in New York, dive into GAGGA’s powerful call to fund women-led climate
action in Alliance Magazine here.

Unlocking Philanthropic Capital for Women-Led Solutions

During UNG80, GAGGA was proud to partner with Foreign Affairs Magazine to participate in a closed
door convening and discussion on “Powering Climate Action: Unlocking Philanthropic Capital for
Women-Led Solutions.”

The event brought together leading voices in philanthropy for an intimate, solutions-oriented
conversation, including a special address from Mary Robinson, Former President of Ireland & climate
justice advocate.

Fondo Centroamericano de Mujeres’s Development and Alliances Coordinator, Claudia Samcam, joined Afua Osei, Director of Strategic Partnerships at Foreign Policy Magazine, for a fireside chat exploring how philanthropy can meaningfully resource women-led climate solutions. Key discussion highlights included:

  • Reflecting on GAGGA’s impact: GAGGA has built a strong global infrastructure to fund,
convene, connect, and catalyze a gender-just climate future across 60 countries – channelling
resources directly to where they’re needed most.
  • Showcasing frontline leadership: GAGGA highlighted that young, rural, Indigenous, Black, and Afro-descendant women, particularly those acutely vulnerable to climate shocks, are leading powerful climate adaptation and mitigation strategies. Locally rooted, women-led climate action is already driving systemic change, often in ways that remain invisible to traditional philanthropy.
  • Calling for greater action: Claudia emphasized the urgent need to unlock philanthropic capital for women-led solutions. It can release resources flexibly and strategically, and prioritize justice, sustainability, and inclusivity in ways that public finance often cannot.

Reimagining Climate Finance with Allies

At Climate Week NYC, GAGGA also co-hosted a Gender and Climate Networking Breakfast with
Chroma Collective, Aga Khan Foundation, and WEDO, convening foundations, UN agencies, civil society
organizations, and networks.

The session began with a shared premise: that the pursuit of gender equality and climate justice are
inseparable – progress in one depends on progress in the other. Building collective action across
communities and sectors is essential to advancing both.

Attendees engaged in dynamic small-group discussions, and from these conversations, three key
themes emerged:

1. Climate Financing: Participants reaffirmed that community-based solutions remain the most
effective path forward – yet systemic barriers continue to prevent grassroots actors from accessing available funds. New intermediaries, shared language, and mutual understanding are needed to bridge that gap.

2. Resourcing Feminist Grassroots Movements: The group highlighted the importance of elevating
grassroots organizations, fostering South-to-South philanthropy, and supporting capacity-building
and thought partnerships. The consensus: we must continue to build an evidence-based case
for resourcing feminist climate action and demonstrate its proven, scalable impact.

3. Road to COP30: Participants emphasized uniting local, regional, and global movements to amplify civil society’s voice – with a shared urgency to turn collaboration into action.

What’s Next

As we head toward COP30 in Brazil, GAGGA will keep championing a gender-just climate future and
amplifying frontline women’s voices. We’ll publish our full schedule of events and engagements soon here.

Will you be there? Let’s connect – collective action is a multiplier. Not attending this year? You can
still follow GAGGA’s COP30 journey on LinkedIn.

Looking ahead, 2026 marks GAGGA’s 10th anniversary, a decade of collective progress and impact. To
honor this milestone, we’ll launch our first global fundraising campaign to accelerate gender-just
climate action. If you’d like to talk before the launch – to collaborate, exchange insights, or explore
partnership opportunities – please email: [email protected].

In solidarity and with gratitude,

Florencia on behalf of the GAGGA team
